METROPOLITAN ATLANTA RAPID TRANSIT AUTHORITY (MARTA)

Project Final:

As our summer comes to a close, we are eager to bring you our first “Finish” post. For the past 8 weeks, we have been working with the MARTA Army. Spark Corps aimed to develop and refine MARTA Army’s identity, assist in the planning of an event and guerilla-style art installations at the station, and provide a framework for planning future events.

Deliverables:

First, we helped develop MARTA Army’s identity with a logo that was able to blend the visual language of MARTA with a youthful feeling.

The logo was accompanied with supporting elements like bus posters, button ideas, bumper sticker templates, and art stencils. The goal of the MARTA Army Visual Identity System (VIS) was to convey an active and transit friendly Atlanta.

In the second part of our project, Spark Corps created an event toolkit MARTA Army could use to promote their mission at local events. Spark Corps chose to create a model toolkit around Free Art Friday (FAF). Centered in Atlanta, FAF is a weekly event in which local artists hide their artwork around the city. It is accompanied with a hashtag and then posted to social media for a lucky person to find. Also on Fridays, the local High Museum offers half priced admission to the museum.

Spark Corps proposed an event where MARTA Army could plan a FAF with MARTA Army made artwork hidden among MARTA Art Center stations. The goal would be to encourage residents to take MARTA and find the artwork, followed by a trip to the museum.

Out toolkit for the event included event posters, social media posts, art samples, and other promotional tools. Moving forward, we are working to provide MARTA Army with a generic toolkit that uses FAF as a model. This toolkit will be used in future events to progress MARTA Army’s goals.

It is an exciting time for the future of MARTA, and there is a tremendous momentum within the organization. Be on the lookout for the development of MARTA Army and ways you can help transform Atlanta’s transit system.
